- Softwoods: Softwood is the wood from conifers. Pine, Spruce, Cedar, Fir, Larch,
Douglas-Fir, Hemlock, Cypress, Redwood and Yew. (Soft does not always mean
that it is softer than hardwood)
- Hardwoods: A hardwood tree is often, but not necessarily, a harder
and denser wood than softwood. The term comes from an old logging camp
“rules of thumb” where woods were sometimes named by their resistance to
sawing.
Examples are Ash, Aspen, Beech, Basswood, Birch, Black Cherry, Black Walnut, Buckeye,
American Chestnut, Cottonwood, Dogwood, Elm, Hackberry, Hickory, Holly,
Locust, Magnolia, Maple, Oak, Poplar, Red Alder, Redbud, Sycamore and Willow.
